How Mrs Bellamy Kept Her Independence with a Home in Her Daughter’s Garden

When Mrs Bellamy’s daughter and son-in-law invited her to move in with them, the offer came from a place of love and support. However, Mrs Bellamy did not want to lose the independence she valued or feel that she had become a burden on her family.

I wanted my independence, not to be a burden.

The family began looking for a way for Mrs Bellamy to live close by while still having a home of her own. A residential home positioned in the garden offered a practical balance: family support was only a few steps away, but Mrs Bellamy could retain her privacy, routines and her own front door.

A home of her own, close to family

For many families, the challenge is not simply finding more space. It is finding a way for different generations to live close together without making either household feel crowded or dependent. A separate home in the garden can create a comfortable middle ground.

Mrs Bellamy could remain part of everyday family life while continuing to make her own choices about meals, visitors, quiet time and how she used her home. Her daughter and son-in-law also gained peace of mind from knowing that she was nearby.

Looking beyond the traditional idea of a caravan

Like many people beginning their research, Mrs Bellamy was unsure what a modern residential mobile home would really feel like. The word “mobile home” can bring to mind a small holiday caravan, but the homes available today can offer spacious living areas, fitted kitchens, comfortable bedrooms, modern bathrooms, heating, storage and a wide choice of finishes.

Seeing the available homes and discussing the layout helped the family understand that the final result could feel like a proper, welcoming home rather than temporary accommodation.

Designing around the person who will live there

A successful garden home should start with the needs of its future resident. Room positions, ease of movement, storage, bathroom arrangements, entrances, lighting and future accessibility can all be considered before the home is ordered.

This is one of the main advantages of taking a personal approach. Instead of expecting the customer to adapt to a fixed layout, the home can be selected and personalised around the way that person wants to live.

More than supplying the home

A project of this kind also involves practical questions. The proposed position must be considered, along with planning, delivery access, the base, drainage, electricity, water and the final siting of the home. Bringing these stages together gives the family a clearer view of the complete project.

Mrs Bellamy has now been living in her home for more than 18 months. Her story shows how families can remain close without sacrificing the independence that matters so much to the person moving.

Could a garden home help your family?

Every property and family situation is different. The first step is to understand who the home would be for, how it would be used, where it might be positioned and whether it can be delivered to the site.

My daughter and son-in-law wanted me to move in with them but I wanted my independence even though I have a slight disability. I started looking for options, sell my home, and use the money to extend my daughter’s home but that seemed to be messy and time consuming. A friend then mentioned I should look at a residential mobile home and put it in Jill & Dave’s garden. Didn’t even know you could do that and didn’t particularly want to live in a caravan. After the usual Google search I found OwnLand Homes. They spent a lot of time understanding what I needed and would like my home to be like, they understood my disability and designed a home specifically for me. They arranged the planning, delivered the home and sited it as per my specifications, arranged the groundworks and utilities all within budget. Anyone thinking of buying a residential mobile home should talk to Ownland and go to their show home centre in Rushden it’s amazing. I’ve now been in my home for 18 months and still hear from Ownland they have an excellent customer service system, and it most certainly isn’t a caravan.
